It would be easy to assume amateur radio is a hobby time forgot — a pastime for people who like Morse code and building antennas, quietly fading as every other form of communication gets easier. The numbers don’t back that up: more than 750,000 licensed operators in the United States alone, and a role in emergency response that keeps proving itself precisely because it depends on none of the infrastructure everything else does.

That last part is the whole point. Cell networks need towers and grid power. Home internet needs both of those plus an ISP’s own infrastructure staying intact. Amateur radio needs an operator, a radio, and a battery — which is exactly why it remains the trusted fallback during hurricanes, wildfires, and grid failures, when every other channel is either overloaded or simply gone.

What’s changed is how much amateur radio can actually do in that situation. Digital modes — Winlink, D-STAR, FT8 among them — have become standard tools rather than curiosities, letting operators send structured messages, email, even basic data over the same modest equipment that used to be limited to voice and Morse. ARRL material on digital emergency communications points to Winlink specifically as the workhorse: a relief coordinator using it over a battery-powered radio can move a real message — a supply request, a casualty report — through a network that doesn’t care whether the local cell tower is standing.

It’s a useful reminder that resilience doesn’t always come from the newest technology. Sometimes it comes from a decades-old one that never depended on the fragile parts of the modern network in the first place, and that just keeps getting quietly better at its one job.
