Inside a Museum's Effort to Boot a PDP-11/40 Back to Life
Volunteers at the Rhode Island Computer Museum are restoring a PDP-11/40, coaxing decades-old software back to life one boot medium at a time.
Not every PDP-11 revival is about enterprise risk management. Some of it is simply volunteers who like the machine, doing the slow, unglamorous work of getting one running again for its own sake. At the Rhode Island Computer Museum, that work has centered this year on a PDP-11/40, one of the mid-range members of DEC’s minicomputer family that shipped in the thousands during the 1970s and now survives mostly in museum basements and private collections.
The restoration has been happening in layers, which is how these projects tend to go. A counting program and a “Light Chaser” diagnostic — small utilities designed to exercise the machine’s front-panel lights, useful for confirming the hardware itself is sound — are up and running again. From there, the team moved to something more ambitious: getting XXDP, DEC’s standard diagnostic and bootstrap operating system, to boot from an emulated RA80 disk drive attached via a Unibone board, a modern add-in that lets period-correct storage protocols talk to hardware that no longer physically exists.
The next target is booting BSD 2.9.1 from disk — an early Unix variant that ran on exactly this class of machine, and a considerably heavier lift than a diagnostic utility. Volunteer notes from the project describe the kind of trial and error involved — in one case, weeks of diagnostic failures traced back to a single broken ground wire in a disk drive cable. Every step is a small negotiation between hardware that’s decades past its design life and software that assumes very specific timing, storage, and peripheral behavior.
It’s slow work, and none of it will ever run a factory floor. But it’s the kind of preservation that makes the enterprise side of PDP-11 survival possible at all — someone has to keep remembering exactly how these machines actually behaved.
