Self-Hosting Goes Mainstream
Running your own media server, photo library, and cloud used to be a hobbyist's pastime. In 2026 it's starting to look like basic privacy hygiene.
For years, self-hosting was a hobby for people who already ran a homelab for its own sake — a rack in a closet, a few Raspberry Pis, and a genuine enthusiasm for yak-shaving your own infrastructure. That’s changed. Self-hosting is increasingly being talked about the way people talk about using a password manager or turning on two-factor authentication: not a hobby, just basic hygiene.
Two things pushed it there. The first is cost: subscription pricing has kept climbing, platforms keep changing the rules with feature removals and API restrictions, and a stack of SaaS bills that once felt reasonable now looks like a solved problem sitting on a shelf. The second, bigger driver is trust — or the lack of it. Privacy policies keep getting longer and less readable, data breaches are routine enough to stop making headlines, and a growing number of people have simply concluded that the safest place for their data is a machine they own.
The tools have matured to match the demand. Jellyfin has overtaken Plex as the default answer to “I don’t want to pay for streaming rights I already own,” largely because Plex’s increasingly aggressive monetization — including paywalling remote streaming of your own library — pushed its own users toward the fully open alternative. Immich has seen similar growth as a Google Photos replacement, offering the same machine-learning-powered search and organization without shipping a family’s photo library off to train someone else’s model. Docker and one-click installers have done the rest, turning what used to require real sysadmin knowledge into something closer to installing an app.
None of this means the cloud is going away — most self-hosters still use it for backups, if nothing else. But the direction of travel is clear: more people are deciding that at least some of their digital life belongs on hardware they can actually see.
